Red Ribbon Week® takes place October 23 – 31, but the most successful school and community campaigns begin well before October.

Ordering materials, assigning responsibilities and promoting activities early gives your team more time to create a meaningful experience—not just a last-minute spirit week.

Use this checklist to begin preparing for the 2026 Red Ribbon Week theme:

“Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.™”

1. Order Official Red Ribbon Week Materials

Confirm your budget, estimate the number of students and participants, and place orders early to allow enough time for delivery.

Consider ordering:

  • Official 2026 theme banners and posters
  • Red ribbons, wristbands, stickers or buttons
  • Pledge cards or a schoolwide commitment banner
  • Bookmarks and educational materials
  • Student contest prizes and giveaways
  • Shirts or themed items for staff and volunteers
  • Decorations for classrooms, hallways and community spaces
  • Materials to share with families and community partners

NIMCO, Inc. is the official supplier of Red Ribbon Week campaign materials and offers merchandise featuring the 2026 theme.

Order official 2026 Red Ribbon Week materials from NIMCO.

2. Build Your Planning Team

Select one campaign coordinator, but avoid making Red Ribbon Week a one-person project.

Invite representatives from:

  • School administration
  • Teachers and counselors
  • Student government or leadership clubs
  • Parent organizations
  • Law enforcement and first responders
  • Local prevention organizations
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Businesses and community groups

Assign specific responsibilities for ordering, activities, volunteers, family communication, decorations, photography and social media.

3. Choose Activities With a Purpose

Spirit days can build excitement, but each activity should connect back to healthy choices, leadership and drug-use prevention.

Schools and community organizations can plan:

  • A schoolwide rally or assembly
  • A Red Ribbon pledge banner
  • Classroom or door-decorating contests
  • Poster, essay, video or announcement contests
  • Student-created prevention messages
  • A family education night or community health fair
  • Peer-to-peer presentations
  • Daily prevention facts during morning announcements
  • A community walk or Red Ribbon caravan
  • A building or local landmark illumination

The Red Ribbon Campaign also suggests involving police departments, health departments and prevention coalitions in educational presentations and community activities.

4. Bring the 2026 Theme to Life

This year’s theme reminds students that choosing to live drug-free is an act of leadership and that their everyday decisions can positively influence others.

Connect activities to the superhero theme by asking students to:

  • Recognize an everyday hero in their school
  • Create posters showing how healthy choices make a difference
  • Write encouraging messages for classmates
  • Nominate students who demonstrate kindness and leadership
  • Dress as their favorite real-life hero
  • Share how they can be positive role models
  • Complete a “My Drug-Free Superpower” activity

Focus on helping students understand that they do not need special powers to make a difference.

5. Invite Community Participation

Ask local partners to:

  • Display Red Ribbon Week posters
  • Sponsor materials, prizes or activities
  • Provide speakers or volunteers
  • Wear red on a designated community day
  • Share prevention resources with families
  • Participate in a rally, walk or health fair
  • Decorate storefronts or community spaces
  • Light a building or landmark red
  • Recognize young people demonstrating positive leadership

Schools can also request an official Red Ribbon Week proclamation from their city, county or local government.

6. Prepare Your Promotional Plan

Begin communicating before Red Ribbon Week arrives so families and community partners have enough time to participate.

Prepare:

  • A full activity calendar
  • Parent emails and newsletter announcements
  • School website and app updates
  • Social media graphics and captions
  • Morning announcements
  • Flyers for businesses and community centers
  • A press release for local media
  • Reminders for each activity
  • Photo and video permission forms when needed

When promoting spirit days, explain the purpose behind each theme—not only what students should wear.

7. Capture and Celebrate the Impact

Choose someone to photograph activities, gather student quotes and document participation.

After Red Ribbon Week:

  • Share photos and campaign highlights
  • Thank volunteers, families and community partners
  • Recognize student leaders
  • Report participation totals
  • Collect feedback from teachers and students
  • Save successful ideas for next year
  • Continue sharing prevention messages throughout the school year
